Coral Gables, FL, November 2015Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is hosting its trendiest event of the year: the 5th Annual Splendor in the Garden on Thursday, January 14, 2016 from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. The event is presented by Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables, Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay, and Neiman Marcus Coral Gables and is sponsored by Ocean Drive magazine and Marquis Bank with support from Selecta magazine. The event attracts a fashion forward crowd of more than 400 guests, and proceeds benefit Fairchild’s programs in education, conservation science, and horticulture.

They are all created using repurposed plant material collected during the year.

FAIRCHILD GARDEN LAUNCHES PARTNERSHIP WITH NASA

Coral Gables, FL, August 17, 2015 Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is pleased to announce a new partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). For the 2015-2016 academic year, scientists and educators at Fairchild and NASA will administer plant experiments for middle and high school students participating in The Fairchild Challenge, an award-winning environmental science competition based in Miami, to determine which edible plants might be suitable for growth in microgravity aboard the International Space Station’s plant growth facility, Veggie. As the project develops, it may help to provide a more sustainable food supply for future long-term missions, perhaps even those en route to Mars.

In addition to the annual photo contest for adults, new this year is a bird photo contest for kids. Entering the contest is free and open to all amateur photographers. The deadline for entries is Friday, September 18.

FAIRCHILD SCIENTISTS SUCCESSFULLY PROPAGATE TWO CRITICALLY IMPERILED NATIVE FERNS

Coral Gables, FL, May 22, 2015 – After two years of diligent propagation efforts, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is pleased to announce the addition of two critically imperiled ferns to its living plant collections: Ctenitis submarginalis and Thelypteris sancta. Both ferns were grown from spores collected in Miami-Dade County in 2013. Spores from the Ctenitis submarginalis were collected right before the population crashed that same year, and the small Thelypteris sancta is the only occurrence of the taxon in North America. Fairchild scientists are hoping to conserve these and other ferns and to increase their populations in the wild.
